History of Berczy Village Community

Berczy Village Community was named after William Berczy, one of the only founders of Markham who was also known as one of Canada’s most famous artists. The establishment of Berczy Village stems from what was once farmland belonging to Frederick Bagg and his wife Emma. Frederick was an agriculturalist and breeder of Jersey cows. The village is a mostly residential neighbourhood with modern homes being built in the early 2000s.
Berczy Village was one of the first communities that adhered to the ‘Smart Growth Initiative’ for suburban communities. This development policy is one that focuses on reducing environmental impact and promotes social equity, housing affordability, respecting nature and preserving heritage.
The Homes

The neighbourhood homes, although modern have heritage-inspired features. The bungalows, detached, semi-detached and townhomes have features that give them a traditional look. Gables, dormers and porches line the sidewalks and give the neighbourhood a small-town charm.
