Introduction to Cedar Wood Community
Cedarwood is a vibrant, relatively new community in South Markham. It is close to community links, shopping and community centres. The real estate varies from newer condo buildings to detached homes and there is a diverse demographic, which adds to its appeal.
Cedarwood community is bordered by Steeles Avenue in the south, Markham Road in the West and to the East it is hugged by the CN railway tracks. The tracks taper from the southeast corner to the northwest corner – giving it a pie-shaped appearance.
The Homes in Cedarwood Community
The Cedarwood neighbourhood comprises a mixture of detached homes, semi-detached homes, towns and link homes, with the detached homes typically having 3-4 bedrooms ranging in size from 1700 square feet and up.
This makes Cedarwood a great choice for families. Recently, new apartment buildings and condominiums have been built in the west of the neighbourhood. This has made it more attractive to younger people, couples and smaller families. The number of rentals has increased, but the majority of homes are owner occupied.
The neighbourhood has a livability score of 78, meaning it is marked as a good place to live and is ranked as #25 best place to live in Markham.
Transport & Commuting from Cedarwood Community
Cedarwood is 10 to 14mins drive to most GO stations in Markham, which makes commuting downtown very easy. It is a 5 min drive to the ON-407 toll road and 15 mins the ON-401. If you want to skip the GO train, the TTC at Scarborough Town Centre is a 19min drive. Markham Road is a major bus route and so getting to other parts of Markham is not a problem for this neighbourhood. Also, there are stores and restaurants within walking and cycling distance
Parks & Recreation in Cedarwood Community
Cedarwood has Remington Parkview Golf and Country Club along its eastern border which is great for golfing enthusiasts! There is a cricket ground, some small green spaces and ponds.
Billingsley Woodlot & Pond – although this space is surrounded by homes, most of it this has been left very natural, with some mown grassy areas around the edge. There is a very small playground.
Fairtree Cricket Ground – a well-kept grassy sports ground edged by trees.
Cedarwood Splash Park – this children’s splash park is attached to the cricket ground. It has washroom facilities and is popular with residents.
Fairtree Pond – this is a nature area with trails and is popular with walkers and cyclists. Cedarwood doesn’t have a community centre of its own, instead, it is equidistant from three nearby centres – Boxgrove Community Centre, Rouge River Community Centre and Aaniin Community Centre. Aaniin centre is a 5min drive and a 10min bike ride is a brand-new centre offering a host of indoor sports, swimming, fitness, a library, creation studio, youth hub and teaching kitchen.
Along the northwest corner of Cedarwood is the Armadale Square shopping plaza. This outdoor plaza is home to the major big box stores and a whole host of restaurants to choose from. People travel from other neighbourhoods to shop at the local Costco, drop their unwanted clothes at Value Village and pick up supplies at Staples and Canadian Tire! There are also grocery stores, banks, a gas station and some small business owners offering food and services. Further south along Markham road, there is a smaller plaza with a bank and another grocery store.
The location of the neighbourhood makes the Scarborough Town Centre and Markville Mall very accessible for people who prefer to shop in a mall!
The area does have its own school in the middle of the neighbourhood – Cedarwood School. It has very good reviews and it is a well-respected school.
