Introduction to Greensborough Community
The Greensborough community is a large residential area in the northwest part of Markham. It is very popular with Markham residents – read on to find out why!
Location
Greensborough is located in the northwest corner of Markham and is bounded by Ninth Line in the east, Markham Road in the west, Major Mackenzie Drive in the north, and 16th Avenue in the south.
History of Greensborough Community
Greensborough was predominantly farmland until around 2005. At that time, Donald Cousens Parkway was completed and residential development began. The community was built around a Smart Growth model. For example, it incorporated residential units with low-density commercial development around lots of parkland spaces. Consequently, this has made Greensborough an incredibly popular place for families to settle, and a sense of community is evident here.
The Homes
Greensborough has a great variety of homes to offer. Townhomes, bungalows, and detached housing to name a few! All the homes are modern with charming features such as porches, or porticoes with balconies above or ‘turret’ style shaping. There is also a retirement community – ‘Swan Lake Village’ at 9th Line and 16th Avenue. This gated condominium community is in a peaceful setting overlooking a small lake. Swan Lake offers residents the benefits of condo living within a community of like-minded neighbours with similar interests.
Transport & Commuting
Greensborough community has Mount Joy GO station located towards the west of the neighbourhood. This is an 8-minute drive or a 9-minute bicycle ride from the area’s furthest reaches. Furthermore, Highway 7 can be reached via Markham Road, and Highway 407 is easily reached via Donald Cousens Parkway. Most people in this area have cars and getting around is very easy from here. Additionally, there are bus routes through this area and cycling here is very popular too as the roads are wide and there are bicycle lanes.
Shopping in Greensborough Community
The neighbourhood has a variety of shopping plazas and places to shop. Along the Markham Road/16th Avenue corner there are two supermarkets, various take-out restaurants, and some smaller businesses. As you go north along Markham road, there are some big box stores and small businesses and another plaza – MarkhaMack Centre with an Asian supermarket and other small businesses. Scattered around the neighbourhood are small businesses and medical clinics, mainly along Bur Oak Drive and Castlemore Road.

There is a community centre in Greensborough – the Mount Joy Community Centre which offers an ice rink with a capacity for 300, 6 dressing rooms, an indoor and outdoor soccer field, and meeting rooms for hire. For fitness centers, pool and gymnasium facilities the Cornell Community Centre is nearby.
Schools in Greensborough Community
There are 3 elementary schools and a high school in this neighbourhood. Sam Chapman Public Elementary School, Greensborough Public Elementary School, St Julia Billiart Catholic Elementary School, and St Brother Andre Catholic High School.
