A Word about School Rankings - What They Can Tell You
(and what they can't!)
The rankings here are from the Fraser Institute – a company that has been assessing public school performance in Ontario annually for 20 years.
We encourage you to have a look at each school individually for more information. The reason for this is that sometimes school rankings can be lower for lots of reasons. For example, some schools may be are teaching a higher percentage of special needs children and therefore their exam results may not be the same as other schools. Similarly, some schools may have higher intakes of children who are learning English as a second language. Consequently, lower rankings do not always mean that a school is of lower quality – quite the opposite in fact!
To help you investigate individual schools – here is a more detailed look at all the schools in Markham in an A-Z list. This list includes a breakdown of percentages of special needs children and children for whom English is a second language. Additionally, it includes the number of children enrolled in Grade 6 in the past year. We also urge you to visit the schools in your area as they all have very different missions, values and facilities, which will factor into your choices.
