Via Kanana -Pantsula, Gumboot, Traditional Dance – Until Feb 28th

Pulsing with rhythmic energy, eight performers of Via Katlehong Dance have teamed up with contemporary choreographer Gregory Maqoma for Via Kanana, examining corruption in South Africa and those in power who make unfulfilled promises in the transition to democracy since the end of Apartheid. At once powerfully physical and deeply emotional, the production evokes a metaphorical new promised land that sadly never arrives. Still, redemption is afoot: the emboldened citizens of South Africa rise and set out to find it for themselves.

Lunar Lanterns of Indigenous Lights – Feb 5th – Mar 6th

Join the Varley Art Gallery where the Lunar Lanterns of Indigenous Lights will be making a return to light up the Year of the Tiger! Featuring six beautiful artworks in the Varley courtyard created by local Indigenous artists, these lanterns are a way to connect the Indigenous cultures of Canada to the Asian tradition of celebrating the Lunar New Year. Through art, storytelling, and traditions, we invite everyone to experience the community coming Together, Stronger.
Come see these lanterns in person starting from February 5 to March 6 in the Varley Art Gallery courtyard and learn the stories of the artists and the artworks.

Ontario Science Centre Junior Scientists: Ocean Exploration – Feb 5th

Investigate some of Earth’s most mysterious underwater ecosystems during a four-part virtual series full of fun and learning for the whole family!
Are you ready to dive in? Join the Science Centre online for Junior Scientists: Ocean Exploration!
This engaging program includes four 90-minute sessions broadcast live from the Ontario Science Centre. Examine a different theme each week through live demonstrations, at-home lab activities and fun crafts using simple household materials. Design your own coral reef, experiment with the special properties of water, learn all about bioluminescence and so much more.
Separate Junior Scientists programs are available for children ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 10, but there’s no age limit on science! With only one registration required per family, this program is a great opportunity to spend time learning and playing together.

The Life of Bees – Feb 3rd – 6.30pm

National Museum of African American History & Culture Livestream Tour – Feb 5th – 4pm

Join Robert Kellerman, the founder of the non-profit community organization Washington, DC History and Culture for an online/virtual tour of The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
The NMAAHC is the world’s largest museum dedicated to African-American history and culture. It ranked as the fourth most-visited Smithsonian museum in its first full year of operation. The museum has more than 40,000 objects in its collection, although only about 3,500 items are on display. The 350,000-square-foot (33,000 m2), 10 story building (five above and five below ground) and its exhibits have won critical praise.

Markham Arts Council Art Spotlight – Rachel Natalie Rawlings – Feb 4th

Tune in to Markham Arts Council to check out Rachel Natalie Rawlings incredible artwork! A Toronto-based Canadian visual artist/illustrator, Rachel Natalie Rawlins was born in Montreal to Trinidadian parents. Her love of drawing and painting people comes from her passion to capture their personalities, attitudes and emotions with her pencil and paintbrush. She doesn’t shy away from creating digital artwork either. In recent years, her work has been seen at the Royal Ontario Museum and ARTA Gallery in Toronto, ON, and at Cheri in Harlem, NY. Additionally, she has conducted painting workshops for children with Raising Artists and painted live at various events.
