Markham at the Movies presents - What's Love got to do with it?
Flato Markham Theatre - Sept 26th - 7pm

How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.

The Last Waltz A Celebration of The Band
Flato Markham Theatre - Sept 22nd - 8pm

This is an all-star line-up, featuring Jerome Levon Avis (Levon Helm’s godson), on drums and vocals with special guests and a nine-piece band led by Maple Blues 2014 ‘Keyboardist of the Year’ Lance Anderson. The performance will recreate the atmosphere of The Band’s final concert, which was captured in Martin Scorcese’s award-winning concert film, The Last Waltz.

On the American Thanksgiving of 1976 at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, The BAND performed what they called their “Last Waltz,” and invited many of their friends to join in the celebration. These friends included Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, and Canadians Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and others who performed with The Band on this special night.

In this homage to The Last Waltz, Anderson’s special guests will perform the songs played and sung by these guest artists at the memorable 1976 concert.
Backed by a 9-piece band that includes Jerome Levon Avis, Terry Blersh on guitar, Dennis Pinhorn (The Hawks) on bass, Rob Gusevs (Blood, Sweat and Tears) on organ and Anderson (Joint Chiefs of Soul) on piano and vocals, this is a group of seasoned veterans who love the music. Anderson’s band also features a stellar four-piece horn section including David Dunlop (Boss Brass) on trumpet, Gord Meyers (Blood, Sweat and Tears) on trombone and tuba, Chris Murphy (The Maple Blues Band) on tenor sax and Simon Wallis (Lighthouse) on baritone sax. An all-star band!

Woodland Boogie Woogie 6 - Art Exhibition - Varley Art Gallery
Sept 23rd - Jan 7th

Featuring the works of Native Art Department International, with Norval Morrisseau (1932–2007), Daphne Odjig (1919–2016), Steve Snake (b.1966), and John Laford (1955–2021)
Curated by Anik Glaude

This exhibition features work by Native Art Department International (NADI) alongside pieces from the collections of the Varley Art Gallery of Markham and Markham Public Art. NADI is a long-term collaborative project founded in Brooklyn in 2016, and administered by Maria Hupfield and Jason Lujan. NADI works to avoid easy categorization by incorporating unannounced actions, curatorial projects, video screenings, paintings, and mixed-use installations.

The painting Woodland Boogie Woogie 6 exemplifies their collaborative work, which sees each artist taking turns to contribute to the large colorful abstract painting included in this exhibition. Their inspiration, and the name of their series, stems from the Woodland School of Art. The Woodland School’s approach was founded by Norval Morrisseau of the Anishinaabe Nation and taken up by other First Nation artists from the Great Lakes Region in the 1960s and 1970s. The style merged traditional imagery with elements of modern art and is defined by bold saturated colours and black curvilinear outlines. Focusing on the key aspects of the style, NADI abstracts the iconic colours and forms used by the Woodland School, in order to expand the visual language and continue the cultural conversation.

The group believes that our selections of music appeals to most everyone; a mix of favourite and familiar melodies for spirituals, sacred anthems, folk and traditional songs, tunes from the musical stage and sometimes, a love ballad from the hit parade.
